Wait so, what? What?

Does this mean Chuck is God?

Because I could kind of be behind that. God'd still be an arsehole who needs a fecking punch in the back of the head because what the hell what kind of twisted assbut does that who the crap let you be a parent you freaking bastard dickface what the hell is wrong with you, but I do like Chuck. Need to rewatch Chuck scenes and see what this could mean because oh wow, the entire structure of the in-show universe would change.

If Chuck were God, how are we supposed to take the whole "Family is the most important thing" angle? Because he obviously isn't practising what he's preaching here. Or maybe it's brotherhood that's more important? The familial relationships on this show are curious ones. And not just the Sam-Dean-John, Lucifer-Michael-God, Cain and Abel aren't-we-clever-look-at-all-our-awesome-metaphors-and-parallels type ones, but the brotherhood between the archangels is fascinating. Like Gabriel and Lucifer, for example - the lower ranking angels it's hard to gage just how much they're brothers and how much they're comrades, but Lucifer felt real remorse at having to kill Gabriel, they spoke to each other like actual brothers. And that's cool, this family-hierarchy thing. How are the structures working here? And exactly what is God playing at?

And, so, God as recording the Winchesters' lives? Writing a gospel instead of bothering with running all of creation? I really like that the show has avoided a lot of actual Christianity, and completely doing away with the Judeo-Christian idea of how God works is one of my favourite parts of the whole armageddon arc. I love that God doesn't care (the bastard), I love that he started all this shit and then just vanished. I love that the angels are a bunch of lost boys with daddy and abandonment issues. I love that one of the very very few obvious things we get God doing is him telling the Winchesters to just leave him alone. But if Chuck is God, then he's still a player in the game, he's... not necessarily active, but he's there, and that's more than we thought. He likes Castiel, so brought him back a couple of times, but really he prefers hookers, alcohol and writing crappy horror novels to actually doing anything.

But, then again, it's hard to believe that God would be henpecked into hosting a fan convention. Although, take Chuck's closing voiceover into account, and humanity is just a bunch of fans. They whinge and complain no matter what he does or what he writes. I love the breaking the fourth wall on this show, by the way. Kripke knows we're gonna complain about the ending so he makes his dudes, just shut up writing is hard and this is the way i want it to be statement right there in the show itself. But that also gives us all these parallels of the writer-creator, who starts a story but might lose control of it, and who can never actually be active within it because it's all about the characters, not the author. It's a post Barthes world, man. The author is dead, and God's the ultimate author.*

I don't know. It's all just off the top of my head type speculation. This show is so ripe for textual analysis. I want to figure some of this out, look closer at the episodes and do some actual research, but maybe when I've calmed down and taken notes and am capable of constructing normal-person sentences that don't run on into oblivion.

For now, have some more reactions:

Dean has a family YAY! I know everyone hates Lisa (except me), but idek I just want him to be happy and he really needs some secure relationships in his life.

And Sam! and Adam! And SAM! SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMM YOU BIG IDIOT I LOVE YOU SO MUCH YOU STUPID MORON WHYYYYY.

Was that Sam or Lucifer at the end there? What was that face? Jared has a very specific set of faces, was that a Sam face or a Lucifer face?

And oh thank feck Cas and Bobby lived. At first I was like BOTH OF THEM??? (AND JIMMY) But then Cas came back and everything is okay and I knew there had to be a reason Bobby didn't explode.

This really felt more like a Grand Finale than just a final. It's a little weird to put another season on after all that talk of ends, but I guess it's Kripke's big farewell, and I'm glad he gave us one. And hey, if S6 is crap it'll at least be easy for upset people to pretend it ended here.

I really hope we get some Sheriff Cas. Hee.

You'd think, the angels being, as the are, a load of dicks, that there'd be some uproar about that, but I mean, really. Michael's in the Pit, Gabriel, Zachariah and Anna are dead, and Raphael is probably still standing in a ring of fire in that old house somewhere, so Cas may actually be the next in line. They could just transfer his time in the field into the relevant prereqs, and an endorsement from God would have to look good on his resume.

Speaking of clown fire, MARKSHA! I'm going to miss Marksha.  :(

From this day forward I shall refer to Michael only as Assbut. Not only is it completely apt, it's also a lot easier to spell.

*which theorist was it that actually wrote about God being dead? Dead in, like, a cultural sense. No, not the one in Hitchhiker's Guide. I studied him in year twelve. Might have been the "End of History" guy? Or not... This is gonna bug me.

All in all, I liked the episode. I'm annoyed with how badly season five as a whole was constructed and I think the finale could have had a lot more punch if the lead up to it had been better controlled, BUT, I've liked every individual episode, and I loved the last few to absolute pieces. I think I loved this one too, even if it did sort of feel completely out of place.

I watched it with my TV cushion turtle. He is my friend. We like all the same shows.

We're still very much in a state of

 though.

I am not even going to acknowledge that S5 is OVER FOREVER and there's MONTHS till the next one and WAAAAAAH.
